The weather was atrocious. My sister, Sue was very
brave and apart from mentioning to me once that she was cold, she said nothing more. We took off in light drizzle and surrounded by dark threatening clouds and a light wind. After an hour we flew into heavy rain and
low clouds, which didn't let up for the next 3.5 hours. At times I had to climb slightly to clear power lines and all the hills in our path we had to fly around. At times the rain was so heavy that visibility was
less than 300 metres. We were both soaked, the rainwater found it's way in everywhere. Just 15 km before Kroonstad, we flew into a storm front and were tossed around like a leaf.
At Kroonstad airport there was a military Puma
helicopter parked on the apron. I talked to the pilot about the weather further north and he told me that it was the same all the way up to Johannesburg and he told me that I was absolutely mad to be flying in this
weather.
We parked the trike in an empty hangar and I drove
back to Johannesburg by bike, while Graham, Fiona and Sue drove the car.
